Conversation guide
Ask to be heard before receiving advice
A partner may offer solutions when you want attention, reassurance or space to explain. Say what kind of response would help before describing the problem, and keep the request small enough to act on now.

When this conversation usually comes up
- Your concern receives immediate advice before you finish explaining.
- A worry is dismissed because there is no obvious practical solution.
- You need comfort but your partner assumes you are asking them to fix the situation.
Before you begin
- Decide whether you want listening, reassurance, advice or practical help.
- Choose a realistic amount of uninterrupted time.
- Say whether you want ideas after you have finished speaking.
Choose a time when you can speak privately and neither person needs to leave immediately. The purpose is to understand the issue and agree on a next step, not to prove which person is entirely right.
Two ways to open the conversation
“Mujhe abhi solution se pehle das minute sirf sunne ki zaroorat hai. Kya tum meri baat complete hone tak sun sakte ho?”
“Jab meri baat ke beech solution milta hai to mujhe lagta hai meri baat suni nahi gayi. Pehle mujhe finish karne do, phir main advice poochungi.”
Change the wording to match your usual level of formality. Keep the event and request intact so the point does not disappear behind softer language.
If the conversation gets stuck
If you hear: “Main help hi to kar raha hoon.”
You could continue: “Mujhe pata hai. Is waqt sab se useful help yeh hogi ke tum pehle meri poori baat suno.”
If you hear: “Is mein upset hone wali kya baat hai?”
You could continue: “Ho sakta hai tum isay different dekho. Main abhi apna experience explain karna chahti hoon, debate nahi.”
What progress can look like
- The requested type of support is stated clearly.
- The listener checks whether advice is wanted.
- Both partners can ask for a short conversation without promising to solve everything.
Practise the words in your own voice
Tell DilSe what happened, who you need to speak with and what you want the conversation to change.
